well i finally think that i am on the road to recovery...
after my back symptoms kept getting worse and worse instead of better,
i ended up in the A&E (ER for you americans) last tuesday after
waking up with no feeling in my right leg..
they admitted me to the spinal ward immediately and sent me for an MRI
which said that I had a very large prolapsed disk in my L5 S1 area
(wherever that is!) they took me into emergency surgery and it was far
worse than they thought....the doctor said that my injury was
old...probably 6 or 7 years old, in fact and that the torn up disc had
turned into bone and he said that he didn't know how i had been living
with that over the last seven years....part of the bone was very jagged
and rough and was damaging my nerve and on the other side of the disc
where it was not jagged it had still turned to bone and was compressing
my nerve....so they did a decompression and discectomy on me, removing
the disc and freeing up my nerves.....i've just returned home last
night, and I have to say that i'm actually feeling pretty good...
my back is sore, which is too be expected, but at least i'm not having
nerve pain anymore....the nerve in my left leg is very irritated still
though and so my foot is in a constant state of pins and needles and
numbness...but that should go away with time and is only happening
because the surgeon had to pull my nerves way over to get them out of
the way and therefore they're just irritated....and the numbness in my
right leg is starting to go away....hopefully the damage from the
oscilized disc won't be permanent....but anything is better than the
nerve pain, let me tell you!
i had a really nice time in the hospital, and despite the pain, i
actually enjoyed it (except for the food which was revolting at the
best of times) the nurses were all super nice and i met some great
people during my stay! now hopefully i can get back to living!
oh yes! and a piece of my artwork has been featured in issue 3 of Kudos Magazine! You can download a PDF copy of the magazine here
